The Bespoke Jewellery Design Process: From First Idea to Finished Piece
A bespoke piece of jewellery is unlike anything you can buy off the shelf. It begins as an idea — sometimes fully formed, sometimes just a feeling — and ends as an object made entirely for one person. At Venetia Major - Bespoke Jewellery, every custom piece follows a considered process designed to bring your vision to life with precision and craft. Here's how it works.
1. The Design Appointment
Every bespoke commission begins with a conversation. We sit down together — in person where possible, or via video call — to talk about the piece you have in mind. We'll discuss the occasion, the person who will wear it, the aesthetic you're drawn to, and any reference images or inspirations you've gathered. There are no wrong answers at this stage; the consultation is about understanding what you want and what's possible.
We'll also discuss budget and timeline at this stage. Fine jewellery made with care takes time — typically 8 to 12 weeks from confirmation of design to completion, depending on complexity. Setting expectations early ensures you're never disappointed.
During the consultation Venetia will translate your brief into a design. This may take the form of hand-drawn sketches, detailed technical drawings, or digital renderings depending on the complexity of the design. This is a collaborative stage and revisions are expected and welcomed. Venetia loves to say "The more you say no, the better it gets"

2. Design Development
Depending on what's involved Venetia may come back to you with further renderings and if the piece involves new gemstones, this is also when we source options for you to consider. We'll present stones with notes on their origin, quality characteristics, and how they'll interact with the design.
3. Gemstone Selection
For pieces centred on a coloured gemstone — sapphire, opal, tourmaline, or others — the stone is often chosen before the metalwork is finalised. A setting should be designed around the stone, not the other way around. We'll help you understand your options and select a stone that suits both the design and your budget.

4. Making
Once the design is finalised and materials confirmed, the making begins. We use a combination of traditional goldsmithing techniques combined with modern equipment. Depending on the design, this may involve fabrication from sheet and wire, casting, stone setting, engraving, or surface finishing — or a combination of all of these.
We work slowly and deliberately. Every join is soldered cleanly, every stone is set securely, and every surface is finished to the standard appropriate for the design — whether that's a high mirror polish, a brushed matte, or a hand-hammered texture.
5. Quality Review and Delivery
Before a piece leaves the studio, it is checked against the original brief and the agreed design. Dimensions, stone security, finish, and overall aesthetic are reviewed carefully. If anything isn't right, it's corrected.
Finished pieces are delivered in our signature packaging, ready to gift or to keep. We include care instructions with every piece and are always available for questions about maintenance and repair.
